In the Netherlands, focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor (hand tremors) is approved, insured, and being performed at the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC). In addition, research using focused ultrasound is being conducted in the Netherlands for prostate cancer, uterine fibroids, metastatic cancer, and brain tumors.

Focused Ultrasound Research in the Netherlands

Several promising Focused Ultrasound studies are currently underway in the Netherlands:

• UMC Utrecht – Metastatic Cancer Study
  Researchers at UMC Utrecht are treating patients with advanced cancer who have multiple metastases and no remaining standard treatment options. Patients receive a one-time Focused Ultrasound treatment combined with immunotherapy infusions administered every four weeks.
• UMC Utrecht and Princess Máxima Center – Brain Tumor Study
  This study uses Focused Ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier, allowing chemotherapy drugs to reach brain tumors more effectively.
• Alzheimer Center – Alzheimer’s Disease Study
  Researchers are using Focused Ultrasound to open the blood-brain barrier, enabling Alzheimer’s medications to penetrate the brain more efficiently. The approach may also help reduce the amyloid plaques associated with the disease.
• Radboud University Medical Center – Depression, Anxiety, and Addiction Study
  Researchers at Radboud UMC are using low-intensity Focused Ultrasound to stimulate specific brain regions and promote the formation of new neural connections in patients with depression, anxiety disorders, and addiction. This may help make patients more receptive to treatment and improve therapeutic outcomes.
